Junior Golfers Perform Well to Advance to International Tournament Glen Allen, Va. - 11 junior golfers scored low to claim top spots at the Bill Vaughn – Optimist Junior Golf Classic on June 29,2010 at The crossings Golf Club. The young golfers qualify to move on to compete in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships July 22nd through August 1st at the PGS Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. In the Boys 10-11 age division, Robert Hollembaek of Crofton shot an 80 to take first place and qualified to move on to compete in the Championships. In the Boys 12-13 age division, Fitz Woodrow IV of Charlottesville came in first with a score of 79. Alex Zakrzeski of Potomac shot an 80 to take second place, while Grant Gonzalez of Midlothian placed third with a score of 85. Woodrow and Zakrzewski qualified to move on to compete in the International Tournament. In the Boys 14-15 age division, Mikey Cantor of Glen Allen came in first with a score of 78. Andrew Coll from Arlington shot a 79 to take second place, while Luke Malanchuk of Arlington and Edric Wung of McLean tied for third with 81. Coll and Malanchuk advanced to the Championship. In the Boys 16-18 division, Kevin Clarke of Midlothian came in first with a score of 70. Josh Neal from Rocky Mount shot a 73 to take second place, while Andrew Kowal of Glen Allen placed third with a 74. Clarke, Neal and Kowal all advance to the International tournament. In the Girls 11-12 age division, Kristin Hearp from Salem came in first with a score of 88 and will advance to the International Tournament. In the Girls 14-15 age division, Lila Taylor of McLean came in first. In the Girls 16-18 age division, Shabril Brewer of Herndon came in first with a score of 79. Shelby Shote from Potomac Falls came in second with a score of 82 and Kayleigh Reed of of Virginia Beach placed third with a sore of 85. Brewer and Shote will advance to play in the International Tournament. Each year the Capital Virginia District raises the funds to cover the registration costs for the players from the members of our clubs, businesses and Friends of Optimist. Hundreds of junior golfers 10 to 18 from 25 different countries and the USA travel to play in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships, now in its 15th year at the PGA. Carrying the motto “Bringing Out the Best in Kids” we conduct positive service projects to reach and give back to the communities. The junior golf program is one of our most prominent projects.
